Well as chick season is upon us it's a good time to remember and/or write down a good check list of must haves and must do.
Must: Fresh water and lots of it. Make sure you dip each little peeps beak into the water as you add them to your brooder.
Heat the little guys need it to be about 95 for the first week then drop about 5 degrees a week after that. If you use a heat lamp just make the heat lamp further from them each week. By week 3 change heat bulb to a regular bulb and drop wattage each week.
Food well this one is a little more choice. Some like to you use a chick medicated feed and others don't use the medicated. Me I prefer not to do medicated I rather buy broiler feed from our local Feed Store.
Bedding in your brooder, biggest thing here is to make sure you keep it clean and dry. So it doesn't get slippy and you end up with little broken legs. I prefer pine shavings.
On day two I like to give my peeps probiotics and electrolytes it's been a tuff 24 hours hatching and/or being in the mail truck. Gives them a little boost. I also like to add just a tiny bit of apple cider vinegar to their water after about a week. Make sure you change water daily.
Give them things to play with hang tiny pie pans or whatever you have around. They peck and play with the toys rather than pecking and picking on each other as much.
